Server Systems
What are Server Systems?
Server Systems are based upon Microsoft Windows 2000/2003/2008
Server* software. This software allows all terminals or thin
clients to be hooked up directly to the server, instead of individual computers
at each location.
What are thin clients?
Thin clients are extremely small footprint computers that
allow connection to the server. Generally, they do not work unless they are
connected to the server. All of the information and programs come from the
Server. This is in contrast to having a whole computer that has it’s own hard
drive and memory.
What advantages do Server Systems
have?
Maintenance is much easier. When updates are done, they are
performed on a single computer (server) instead of having to do the install on
each individual computer in the business. Server Systems allow access to
programs through the Internet and allow for branch offices to utilize the same
system.
When does it make sense to use a
Server based System?
For new installations, the break-even point financially is
about 4-5 terminals. In respect to maintainability and performance the break-even
point is about 3 – 4 terminals.
How many terminals can a Server
based System Handle?
The practical limit is about 30 terminals. The number of
thin clients that can be supported depends on the type of CPU used and amount of
memory in the Server.
We would be glad to discuss your situation and determine if a
Server system is right for you.
